changes to admin-function.php file lead to white screen

  • Hello. Just yesterday, like a total muppet, I made a change to my admin-functions.php file. I was trying to enter in some javascript command and realized that I wasn’t in the main functions.php folder only after it was too late. I saved the changes in the dashboard editor and tried to load the page, only to find that my page would no longer load (white screen).

    To solve this issue, I tried just restoring the file with a backup that I had, but this didn’t work. I also contacted my host and asked them if they could restore my site’s files (i.e. everything in the public directory) as of a couple of days before the issue. This didn’t work either. Now, my mind is beyond puzzled – I don’t understand how restoring all of my sites files to before the issue occurred does not fix the problem.

    At this point, I would settle just just reinstalling wordpress and starting from fresh, but I’m not even sure how to do that.

    I could desperately use some guidance.

  • Restoring from backup didn’t fix it? Now that’s a bad sign. Did your code interact in some way with your database? Do your server logs show anything?

    I don’t know how to tell if the code did interact in some way with the database. I’m currently checking with my host. Should I be able to check my server logs through my hosting control panel?

    Also, is it possible to bypass this whole issue by re-installing wordpress?

    Possibly. But we want to make sure your content (i.e. the stuff in the database) is okay or else you’ll be starting from scratch.
