I made a backup of the whole site.
    I then initialized the installer.php.
It always ends in an error.

I have used non-English characters in my file names (old blog, I know better know).
So this plugin changes them to these weird characters: ├
which I guess the importer has problems with.

Usually, this happens when the server does not have proper localization support. Try using PHP 7 if you are not and see if that fixes the problem for you.

ok. good point. I checked my PHP version and it was due for an update.
But, now the scan never finishes.

Trying to create a new package.
I also tried reinstalling the plugin, but the same happens.

    suggestions?

See if your hosting provider can assist you with this. You probably need to configure the server to have enough memory and time for PHP processes.

    ok. thanks for the hint.
    (But it worked before?)

what are enough memory and time?
