    Hi,
I have recently been doing a little bit of self training on wordpress as I have started a job where they want me to update the website but I had never used wordpress before. I noticed that our pages had stupid names ie: https://www.simplycounselling.org/?page_id=1352
I wanted that page to read https://www.simplycounselling.org/DomesticAbuse

However when I changed permalinks from default to this format I got error 404 page not displayed. I had to revert back to default to get the pages to show again.

Any ideas how I can do this without starting all over from scratch?
    Thanks

Would you please let us know exactly which permalink structure you chose?

    Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me. I used ‘post name’
    Thanks.

Does it work with any other structures? If not, ask your hosting provider if mod_rewrite is active on your server.

If it does work with other structures, please let us know. ??

I’m really sorry I do not fully understand what other structures you mean. I think you mean, Day and name, Month and name,Numeric,Post name,Custom Structure.

Then the answer is no. I get error 404 if I chose any of those.

    Thanks

Ok, in that case you’ll need to ask your hosting provider if mod_rewrite is installed and active on your server.

    Hi,

Thank you for your help. I have raised a ticket with them and asked that question. When they come back to me I will let you know. We are with Haisoft.
    Thanks

They have come back to me with this:

mod_rewrite is active on our servers.

You need to activate permalinks in your wordpress settings.

Can you tell me how I do the above?
    Thank you

That just means select the structure you want and hit save..

Once you have done that open your website in a different browser, to rule out the browser cache, and see if that works.

If it doesn’t check your .htaccess file is present and correct in the root of your website.

Are you running any other caching plugins?

I did that. But then I get error 404 and a blank page for every page except the home page.

“If it doesn’t check your .htaccess file is present and correct in the root of your website.” I have no idea how to do this ??

Are you running any other caching plugins? I’m not sure. How will I know? I do have plugins, but they were put there originally so I do not know what they are for.

Sorry to be so vague. I am very new to this and learning as I go.

    Thanks

    Do you have FTP access?

Your .htaccess file should be in the public_html directory.

If you don’t see a .htaccess file there, make sure that your FTP client is set to show invisible or hidden files.
