• Hi,

I’m using the plugin to hide a few menu items from non-admin users. And it works just fine. However, changing the menu title displays incorrectly.

For example I have renamed Bookly to Ello.ee and as a result, it displayed in the menu as “>Ello.ee-menu[menu_title]”.

Here you can see it on screenshots:

Also, I’m using it on network multisite.

    Looking forward to your reply.

That’s an unusual issue, I don’t think I’ve seen anything like that before. Here are some questions and things to check:

    • Does the same problem happen with all menu items or just “Bookly”? If it affects all menu items, do all of them get the same -menu[menu_title] suffix or is it different for every item?
    • Were you logged in as the Super Admin when you edited the menu? In Multisite the plugin does some additional menu title sanitization so maybe there could be a bug there, but it only applies regular admins, not Super Admins.
    • If you’re familiar with web development, could you please take a look at the page source code and see what the menu item HTML looks like? The fact that the menu title starts with > makes me suspect that something could be generating the wrong HTML and the > was left over from some broken tag.

    Hi Janis,

thank you for the prompt reply.

It seems to be only affecting Bookly plugin, here’s an example of me changing other plugin menu titles: https://ibb.co/Hhhdp19 (same goes for Bookly Cloud).

    2. I’m logged in as SA, but I also tried to use other user roles, such as Bookly Administrator.

Hello, we’d love to help you here with your Bookly concern but we can’t. We are restricted from providing any support for the PRO version here. For PRO or commercial product support please contact us directly on our site. This includes any pre-sales topics as well. I am sure we will have no problem supporting you on our own site. Many thanks!

I have now tested this on WordPress 5.6.1, Multisite with Bookly 19.4 (free version), and I can’t reproduce the problem. When I change the menu title from “Bookly” to “Ello.ee”, it is displayed correctly as “Ello.ee”. There is no additional code or text in the menu title. I also tried changing the site language to Russian in case that had something to do with it, but it had no effect on the menu title.

Speaking of languages, could it be that your site us running WPML or another translation plugin and it has the wrong translation for “Ello.ee” or it is configured to show the names of untranslated strings? Admin Menu Editor has limited WPML support: it makes it possible to translate custom menu titles. The names of the translatable strings would look similar to >slug[menu_title].

Yes, I’m running WPML for translations. In WPML I can see new strings created when the menu added, and I applied translations. However, this didn’t solve the issue.

Does your PRO version solve this or at this moment it’s not compatible with WPML (and with Bookly)?

The Pro version probably wouldn’t make a difference in this case. It doesn’t have any additional translation-related features.

I have now tested this with WPML 4.4.9 and WPML String Translation 3.1.7. I also applied some placeholder translations to the Bookly menu. They seem to work fine: the menu shows the translated title and nothing else (in this case, I used “RU Translation” as a placeholder “translation” since I can’t actually write Russian).

I’m not aware of any conflicts between this plugin and Bookly, and the above test seems to suggest that the WPML integration is still working as expected (though it could probably use more thorough testing). Are you running anything else that could affect translations; perhaps some functions.php scripts?
