Error Message: Unable to create directory uploads/2015/07. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

I changed hosting plans at Godaddy I went from a shared hosting plan to a C-Panel hosting plan. In the dashboard, when I look at media library, it only shows me 2 months worth of media images. When I look at my files with my FTP client, I have many months and years of images that are not in use but available if I wanted to use them. I cant access those images inside of my dashboard and I cant add any images either.

I tried to update the media settings to “Store Uploads To this Folder: /wp-content/uploads” I have tried the check box “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” I have also tried to changing the file permissions of Wp-Content using Filezilla to 777 to allow me to upload, but that wont work either.

I think it has something to do with the database PHP files, or another file telling wordpress to look at the wrong set of database files. I called Godaddy to get some help, but they sweep me under the “We don’t support wordpress problems” statement, and referred me here.

So which PHP file is related to the Media File? Which PHP file relates to the Media files in the dashboard or is restricting my access to see other dated media folders?

I found out today, that if you keep calling Godaddy, you will eventually find someone in support who is willing and capable of helping you. The key is knowing the right questions to ask.

So, there was a problem with the WP_Options folder in MyPHP. On the second page, there is a line called Upload_Path. The Option Value should contain “WP_Content/Uploads/” or yours might be blank. After you have already tried to change this in your wordpress dashboard: Settings/Media without any success, try deleting the file path in the PHP. Then save and try to upload, it worked for me. So my upload path in the PHP is now blank. Now when I go back into my Media Settings, it does not give me any options where to store the media it only shows the check box option to “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” and that box is unchecked at the moment.

So for now, this topic is resolved.

Just in case anyone else runs into this – I also had a this issue with GoDaddy hosting, everything was working fine until this month when suddenly, media uploads weren’t working.

Was getting the Is its parent directory writable by the server? error and GoDaddy support was unhelpful/unsuccessful, we assumed it was a file permissions issue.

Thankfully, ran into this post and fixed the problem by editing the database as noted by ForeverXpressions: WP_Options, cleared out Upload_Path.
