• Hi everyone,

I just started using WordPress last week, and have been slowly building my website.
I’m using the Catch Everest Theme and since it didn’t have a way to add menus to the footer, I consulted a website that walked me through how to do it.

The first step was to add something to the functions.php page, which I did, but then got the dreaded “Server Error”. I went back and deleted the code I added, but still get the error. I even found the exact original code for the functions.php page via Google, copies and pasted it, and still nothing. I can’t log in, can’t make any changes to anything at all! I’m just stuck in the functions.php page with no clue as to what I did wrong.

Can anyone help? My website is arcturusastrology.com, if that helps.

    Cheers,

    Lynne

  • Did you make a backup of functions.php before editing it? If so, did you restore it that way, or did you copy and paste?

Unfortunately, I was dumb and didn’t do that. I just deleted the original code, and then copied and pasted what remained into Google and found the exact same code. I copied and pasted the entire code from that site, but nada.

Download the theme to your desktop, unzip it and extract the original functions.php then upload it to your server to replace the messed up one.

I downloaded it onto my desktop, and found the functions.php file, but it looks different than the one I had. The original file was pretty short and referenced Retina, but this one didn’t at all and was quite long. I made certain that I downloaded the correct theme, so this seems really weird.

I copied this new function.php file (and copied the shorter code that referenced Retina into a different file just in case). Now I can edit the Menus, but I can no long access the Editor.

You sure it’s the right functions.php file? There’s more than one.

The one I was playing around with when the problem happened was under the heading Retina: Themes and then said “functions.php” in italics underneath it.

But now it seems moot since I can’t even get back into the editor to paste in any different code that I do find. ??

    Do you have FTP access?

I have CyberDuck, but don’t have a specific FTP username or password.

You can contact your hosting providers to get FTP access.

I agree – contact your host.

Do you know who is your host?

Yes, it’s FatCow. I’m chatting with someone now about getting the FTP username.

    Hi all,

I’m now able to log in via FTP.

I’d suggest you rename or delete that theme and then reinstall it – you can find the theme here:

    wp-content
        themes
           catch-everest.HOLD (or delete the folder)

I changed the name of the folder as you suggested. Is there something special I need to do to reinstall the theme? I assumed that I needed to go into dashboard to reinstall but I still can’t get in.

Try deleting that folder entirely. Also, check whether you have one of the default themes in the themes folder – twentyeleven, twentytwelve or twentythirteen should all be there.
