Changed Blog Folder Name Already

  • Greetings. I migrated a 700-post blog from Blogger recently. It was a trial, but all is near perfect. Old blog was at example.com/blog, so I found tutorials explaining how to migrate and keep same directory name: 1) migrate blog to folder wordpress, 2) change URLs in WP admin, 3) access server via FTP and rename blog to blog-old, 4) then rename wordpress to blog.

    Now I want to upgrade WP. I go to my host and the Install facility still thinks WP is installed in directory wordpress. I have read all of the codex articles regarding what I should have done. The question is, what do I do now? How can I tell my server the new folder name?

    Everyone says ‘migrate to WP’ if you have a serious blog. So I did, and it took me 3 weeks. I did tons of research, but not knowing WP, I didn’t know this would happen and nobody mentioned it. I’m starting to panic because I can’t upgrade WP and my database backups are probably useless, too. Please help. Thanks!

    Upgrade your install manually. It only takes a few minutes.

    Thanks for the quick reply. I’m a little disappointed that I cannot use my host’s mechanism to update. I’m not technical when it comes to WP, SQL, etc.

    Anyway, I read the instructions from the link you gave me. Even though I’m at 2.8, the instructions for 2.7 say:

    Follow Steps 1 through 4 below, then visit Administration > Tools > Upgrade and click the Upgrade Automatically button.

    I have that button (!) but hadn’t noticed it before. This process is short compared to the other directions. Will this work in my situation?

    Also, I made some changes to the php files to remove/change date structures, etc., and made lots of CSS changes. I assume that I will just restore those back to the appropriate folder?

    It might. I was just suggesting that the manual upgrade process via ftp is pretty much foolproof if you follow the instructions.

    You shouldn’t upgrade or replace or delete your wp-content directory or its contents. Just back it up via ftp and then verify that everything is in the backup.

    If you changed anything in core WordPress files, those changes will be lost in the upgrade as those files will all be replaced with new versions. If you just changed the code in your theme files, those changes won’t be affected by upgrading because they are in your wp-content folder.

    I only changed files that were under “Editor” under the Theme. I assume that these are NOT WordPress files, so WordPress doesn’t care about them. I guess I need to review again what is in what folder. Sigh.
