On my woocommerce (free) site, when I select some color variations on a product page, sometimes the main image changes (details: On the product page, I change the color variation using the dropdown, and one of the thumbnails becomes the feature image). However, I never set anything when editing (or syncing with Printify) my products that tells the variation color which image to choose … nor can I see anywhere to set the variation image choices. It seems like it is at random.

Can someone tell me how to configure this? Ideally, I would like to set the image to associate with each product variation. But, if that is a pro feature, then I would just like to turn this off. Please help.

Note: I tried the Variation Swatches for WooCommerce plugin, but that didn’t help (and is not useful for stores that use printify, because printify doesn’t upload products with global variations).

  • Hi there @jabbamonkey ??

Thank you for reaching out. I’d be happy to help you with this.

Ideally, I would like to set the image to associate with each product variation.

Please note that the way to assign an image per variation is detailed in the documentation section, linked here, for your convenience.

Things should work as described with only the WooCommerce plugin installed and activated.

Since Printify is also mentioned, should things work differently with their functionality added to your WooCommerce store, feel free to reach out to its support channel (linked here), as they would be in a better position to assist you.

I trust that points you in the right direction, but if you have more questions, let us know.

    We’re happy to help.

    I’ll take a look.

I’m curious if there is a way to do this using the new WooCommerce product page interface (currently in Beta)?

Ok.. This is VERY confusing … and the interface is NOT very user intuitive (hint, hint!). But I think I see what is going on….

So, if editing a product, and one of the VARIATIONS is “RED” and “ANY SIZE” … nothing happens when the user selects RED on the live product page, or if they just select a SIZE. But, if they choose RED and THEN choose a size, the image changes.

Is there a way to make it so the color changes the image ONLY and the size doesn’t affect the images? (but doesn’t make the size drop down disappear from the page)

(and I’m not sure what the ATTRIBUTES checkbox for “Visible on Product Page” does … because toggling that check box doesn’t seem to do anything … the option is always viewable on the Product page, whether checked or unchecked. But if you uncheck “Used for variations” … THEN the attribute disappears from the product page)

    Hello @jabbamonkey,

So, if editing a product, and one of the VARIATIONS is “RED” and “ANY SIZE” … nothing happens when the user selects RED on the live product page, or if they just select a SIZE. But, if they choose RED and THEN choose a size, the image changes.

This is expected, regardless of the product editor used, all variations must be selected to see the image change. There’s an open feature request to change this behaviour here. I suggest you follow it from the side bar to stay updated. :?)

Is there a way to make it so the color changes the image ONLY and the size doesn’t affect the images? (but doesn’t make the size drop down disappear from the page)

Take a look at this snippet: https://stackoverflow.com/a/66242525

You can add with a plugin like Simple Custom CSS and JS. Please note that custom solutions are not something we can assist with per our support policy so if you need to customize this further, consider hiring a WooExpert.

(and I’m not sure what the ATTRIBUTES checkbox for “Visible on Product Page” does … because toggling that check box doesn’t seem to do anything

This will determine whether the attributes will be visible in the additional details section here. :?)
