Change thumbnail background-color for different categories

When a featured image is not set, the thumbnail shows a light-grey background-color. Is there a way (maybe through the functions.php) to set different colors to different post categories?
For example: when the category is ‘books’ the background-color is #00B0BD; when the category is ‘music’the background-color is #3D0000
