Change the default setting for side bar layout

After searching for hours I have been unable to find anything that explains how to change the default side bar layout setting so that when ever a new page or post is created one doesn’t have to keep checking the box near the bottom from right side bar to no side bar. Is this possible without creating a custom page template? I am curious why this isn’t an option in the setting portion of wordpress?
