change registration & login requirements from user id & password to …

  • would anyone know how to change the login requirements from
    “user id & password” to “email address & password”

    In particular I don’t want wordpress to kick back a response to new sign ups that a particular user id has already been taken. Rather I want the email address to be the unique criteria for login.

    You need to customize wp-login.php file from wp-includes folder of wordpress blog..from there you can do it upon your requirement

    Is there any area in particular I’d need to change?

    would I need to change any “registration” widgets such as Register Plus?
