Change product-category slug

Hi! I’ve read that it’s not advised to delete the “product-category” part of the url because of how WordPress works. Could any issue arise if instead I change it to something shorter such as “cat” ? I would use a redirect plugin in order to redirect the older category pages so Google catches up.
