Change "Popular Posts" to sorted Custom Field?

Hi, I’m trying to modify a theme slightly. On the main home page, it has a tabbed section which the 3 tabs: Recent Posts, Popular Posts, and Recent Comments.

The “Popular Posts” appears that it just shows posts that have been commented on the most. However, this theme has a custom field added to the posts which allows you to “Vote” for a post. I would like the “Popular Posts” tab to show the posts that have the most “Votes” organized from most to fewest. I think I have found the correct part in the index.php but don’t know enough about WordPress to alter it. Can anybody give me any suggestions?
