• I’m changing my hosting service and now find that whilst I can add new posts I can’t amend any of them.

For the change, I backed up the DB from the old server, restored that on the new one (adding utf8 encoding as suggested elsewhere) and copied the various HTML etc. files across. I also changed the defaults on the new host to utf8 as suggested.

The new setup lets me write new posts but doesn’t let me amend them. When I try amending a post, the edit screen comes up fine but when I save it, it goes straight to the domain screen rather than staying within the wordpress software and the changes haven’t been saved.

  • I’m sorry to hear that. Just a simple question… Do you still have your website at the old host?

it goes straight to the domain screen …

Can you elaborate on what is a domain screen?

Yes, everything is working fine on the old host.

Say I’m amending a post for onapostcard.com, when I click save (or even post for new ones), the next screen that appears is the homepage of onapostcard.com ie you’re dropped right out of the wordpress software.

The old host is on MySQL 4.1, the new one on 4.1.22 .

I’ve been playing about with it some more, started with a clean installation, used WP export function on the old host and imported the posts to the new one.

Same problem. However, I’ve noted that the problems only happen when I use the visual editor OR if I am using the editor and confine myself to alphanumeric characters (the “<” and “>” definitely throw it).

It also happens when I’m trying to configure any plugins that use non-alphanumeric characters in their parameters.

So, I’m thinking that it’s something to do with the character set translation which doesn’t fix it but at least narrows down the problem area I think.

What exactly is ‘WP export function’? Do you mean using Mr. Merrill’s WordPress Database Backup?

Oh, I see. You mean, using Manage > Export?

I would suggest using WordPress Database Backup after updating WP so that you could use the same version WP at the new host.

Using WordPress Database Backup worked for me when we switched hosting companies in March. And we can edit old posts.
