Change Menu and drop down menu width, and padding(vertical padding))

How do I change the padding on both the height and the width of the menu and the drop down menu? I’ve got a menu named primary, and I’m not sure how to make changes. I’ve tried the solutions that have come up on the forums for other themes, but they don’t seem to work when I post them into the addition ccs box and publish.
