Thanks. This helped a lot and I am much closer to what I want.
However now the home page shows the static page Home but right below it it also shows the blog page with all the blog posts. I just want the home page to show the static page

Have you told WP what page to use for the posts? If not, read the article again. You need to create a blank page and then set that page as the posts page in your WP settings.

The problem was I had the blank page set to Showcase Template. I changed it back to default template. however now on the static home page (blank page) it allows people to leave a reply. I want to get rid of that reply box

    Just configuration.

Go to Dashboard –> Pages –> All Pages and click on the page in question to edit it.

On the Edit Page page, click on the “Screen Options” tab at top right. Make sure that the ‘Discussion’ check box is checked. Now scroll down below the visual editor and your should see a ‘Discussion’ panel. Uncheck the ‘Allow comments’ check box and click the ‘Update’ button.

When the page has finished updating, navigate to the page and confirm that the comments box has been removed.

Thanks I had all my screen options unchecked.
It works just how I want it now!

Glad it’s worked out for you.
