    I ultimately just deleted the logo from the header, and added some code to the header.php file.

    Yes, since the theme does not support that feature you have to edit the header.php

    However, I recommend to create a child theme and override the header.php in it to make these modifications. Otherwise you will lose your customizations with the next update, because all files are replaced then.
