• Hey all,

I’m just starting to use multisite. I’ve got it setup on my domain, demo.com and it’s using subdomains for the sites. So I have siteA.demo.com, siteB.demo.com…..

What I want to know is can I create a site on the subdomain using folders. For example, I created a site at siteA.demo.com….can I configure the multisite to then allow me to create a site at siteA.demo.com/newsite?

I have a feeling it’s not possible, but any input is greatly appreciated.

    It’s possible.

You need to use a MultiNetwork plugin to do this, however.

Ok cool. So would I install it in the parent site at demo.com and go from there?

No, you network activate it so it’s up for all sites (it’s one of those oddities). Then you can make subsites off sites ??

Ok forgive me for asking more questions.

I installed WP Multi Network plugin on the parent site. Netowrk activated it. Created a network at siteA.demo.com/testsite

However, that test site doesn’t really exist. It tells me that page doesn’t exist if I try to view it or go to it’s dashboard.

Any idea why it would do that?

    Thanks!

I installed WP Multi Network plugin on the parent site. Netowrk activated it. Created a network at siteA.demo.com/testsite

Please tell me you installed in the NETWORK admin of the main site?

Go into your main site, visit the permalinks page, and hit save. Make no changes. Just hit save.

Yes I did install it in the Network of the main site: demo.com/wp-admin/network

I updated the permalinks, still the same.

Maybe I’m setting it up wrong? When I create a network I fill in the following:

    Name: name
    Domain: https://siteA.demo.com
    Path: /testsite
Site Name: Name of the site.

I know you’re not here to give free advice so I apologize. I appreciate all of this help though.

I know you’re not here to give free advice so I apologize

    Actually I am ??

    Path: /testsite

    That should just be /

But the acutal issue is that you created a network AND a site called sitea.demo.com

Look at your ‘My Sites’ dropdown and I bet you can see it listed twice.

You can’t have them named the same (and you can’t convert a site into a network…easily).

This is weird, so hang on.

    Go into your database.

Go to wp_blogs and you should see two SiteAs.

ONE will have the same site ID and Blog ID

    Delete that one.

Then edit the one that;s left to have the same Site ID and blog ID. So if siteA has a blog ID of 2, make the site ID 2

    NOW remember that number.

    Go to wp_site

Edit the entry for siteA.demo.com and change the SITE ID to that number (2 in our example). Should be good now.

Ok sweet. So I accomplished that. I have siteA.demo.com as a network. Now my next step is getting sites at siteA.demo.com/whatever

If I go to add sites on that network, it wants to do whatever.siteA.demo.com

Is this when I have to change the wp-config file?

I actually went in and edited the site in wp admin -> Network -> Sites

Changed whatever.siteA.demo.com to have the domain of siteA.demo.com and the path of /whatever/

    Done.

    Thread Starter usaliverpoolfc

    (@usaliverpoolfc)

Ok I did that. It didn’t work though. It just tells me the page doesn’t exist when I try to go to the url siteA.demo.com/whatever

Even if I leave it as whatever.siteA.demo.com it doesn’t work. My subdomains are created. I have siteA.demo.com pointed at my root folder and that one works. It’s just these extra sites.

    Thread Starter usaliverpoolfc

    (@usaliverpoolfc)

Also, would it just be easier to start with sub directories instead of subdomains and then subdirectories? I have no problem going with demo.com/siteA/whatever if that can be done as well.

    Thanks!

    That’s new…

Can you get to siteA.demo.com and from THERE see a list of ‘My Sites’ that includes the ‘whatever’ site?

Also, would it just be easier to start with sub directories instead of subdomains and then subdirectories? I

No, it’d be about the same.

    Thread Starter usaliverpoolfc

Yea so right now this is what I see:

On demo.com/wp-admin/network all I see for sites is demo.com
    For networks, I see demo.com and siteA.demo.com

    On siteA.demo.com/wp-admin/network/:
    For site, I see siteA.demo.com and whatever.siteA.demo.com
Then for networks I see the same as above.

But like I said, nothing exists on whatever.siteA.demo.com or siteA.demo.com/whatever

This is a test site, so I can start from scratch if that is something that needs to be entertained. Thanks.

Okay, what do YOU mean by ‘nothing’? Remember I can’t see what you see, so you have tell me “I get a blank white page” or “I get a 404” or whatever it is you see.

    Thread Starter usaliverpoolfc

    (@usaliverpoolfc)

Ok I might as well just share the links, its not a big deal lol.

https://whatever.liverpool.twoyanksandasport.com – just gives dns errors.

    https://liverpool.twoyanksandasport.com/whatever – 404 page cannnot be found.
