    Hi all,
When I auto share to Facebook it pulls quite alot of text from the page into the Facebook post, I want this to be shorter. Is there somewhere in the code where I can edit how many character or words are pulled into the Facebook post?

If not is there a way to hard code an excerpt so the same message appears in the excerpt box everytime it loads?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi there,

We don’t currently have a way to set how many characters or words get pulled from the content into the social media post but I’m happy to share this with the development team so that they can look into adding such a feature. I imagine it might be useful for folks who don’t want to have to make too many edits to the social media post before it goes out.

That said, note that (maybe you’re already aware) you can set a custom message for the post before it’s published. This is different from the post excerpt box. Maybe, we are referring to the same thing. Anyway, just in case, there’s more information about this on our support documentation.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

    Hi again,

I got in touch with the development team. We might look into potentially adding a feature that allows you to either set once how much of your post content gets pulled into the corresponding social media post or set a default custom message across all posts.

In the meantime, since you mentioned wanting to hardcode things, it might interest you to know that you can set the post excerpt that is used by Jetpack Social when the post is saved by setting the _wpas_mess post meta value to your desired default using the save_post hook.

    Hope that helps.
