Change “badge” in Post (Type) block to something other then the category

Is there a way to change the “badge” in the Post (Type) block to be a text area instead of the Category?

I like the display of it, overlayed on the photo, but instead of the category, would like it to be a modify-able text area where I could put in a date.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
