• I wanted to post a warning that the support for this product on the paid side has been abandoned. This is not a comment from a lone person that is in some way dissatisfied with the level of support given. I directly mean to say that the developer, Fabian Schlieper, has abandoned his own support forums with multiple people asking on the boards why there is no support after weeks and months of waiting. I say this here because there is no way to provide this as notice on his own web site without first purchasing the product. I had to go through the process of getting a refund from PayPal.

In no way would I want this to be taken as a personal attack on Fabian. Frankly, wisdom is walking softly here. For someone to disappear from such a large effort and with a track record of support could mean poor behavior on their part but could just as easily mean something like a life tragedy for themselves or a loved one.

It is also not an attack on what this plugin seeks to accomplish. If support and future development has ceased on this tool (whether for good reasons or not), it is a true loss. There is nothing in the WordPress plugins that does some of the unique things capable in this plugin. It is going to be a felt loss to the online learning community we are seeking to build in terms of allowing users input in a fluid way that syncs back-up to our shared repository on Amazon S3.

By the way, I was more than happy to pay the $199 for the Pro version given the capability it permitted. If Fabian Schlieper has truly fully abandoned the effort, I hope someone will come into the space and provide a tool that matches this capability, either through forking or an entirely newly developed plugin. Obviously, the top choice is that Fabian comes back and becomes active again.

    I second that emotion.

And am also willing to pay a yearly fee for updates and support.

Excellent point. Yes, I would actually prefer to be charged a yearly fee for serious plugins that I am using in key ways.

As Chris Lema has blogged, the challenge is that the ‘one time fee’ business model can often become unsustainable because the new sales might drop off and existing customers are still driving for support and feature expansion.

For serious core plugins, I want the developer to do well in the service they are providing all of us. It is in all our best interests that they both financially succeed and feel successful/enjoy their work.

We’re already using the pro version but there’s been no update in recent months and we fear it will eventually stop working for us.

We’re looking for an alternative or better yet, for Fabian to resume development.

He IS still around, hope to hear something from him soon.

I feel the same way. Awesome plug-in. I bought the pro multiple bundle. I hope this project continues on; and I hope for the best.

Anyone can recommend a good alternative?
    Thanks

Support is back on ?? program was just updated. Thank you!

That’s too late for me, I switched to something else.
Also this is not professional at all.
You just don’t walk away from a commercial product like how you did, and you just don’t come back like “hey guys I’m back! Let’s have a beer together!”.
Looking at this thread, you had left clients down when they needed support and you should at least explain how could you leave the thing unmanaged like that and at least explain that this is never going to happen again, if this is something you can promise at all.

Good to see you back Fabian!

This is the best damn WordPress file manager ever!

Keep her going, we’re going to be renewing in February!

@janfry can you tell me to what you switched ?

    @mstudioil

In my case it was a work for a client and he was already using EasyMemberPro (a membership software covering downloads too), so since the downloads had to be granted under strongly customized rules, I abandoned the idea of using any wordpress download plugins at all and ended up modifying Easy Member Pro directly instead.

But probably if your download rules are not so particular some other wordpress download plugin will be good, I’m sorry I can’t advice any because I don’t remember those I evaluated before deciding to go my way..

Try some popular one, and keep in high consideration as a choosing factor, the last time it was updated because this means that devs are constantly working on it and adding features.

Also, with this occasion I want to say that probably my words toward the dev of this project were a bit too heavy. We are all humans after all. I didn’t check but I hope it started to get mantained again.
