• The problem that has become apparent is that my website has several distinct search tools. In an effort to make this clear to my users I created a post with details:

    [ redundant link removed ]

I think the primary issue is that the standard search edit in the sidebar doesn’t make it clear that it will not search the bbPress support forum. Likewise, it will not search the two external online help systems.

Is there any way that I can adjust the search edit box widget so that there is some options indicating which part of the website search tools it will use and then it perform that actual search and take you there? Can this be done?

The default search widget is very basic. To enhance it would entail writing a lot of new code to the point the original would be difficult to recognize. What if you implemented something like this site’s search results? Not the fact that it’s a Google based search. I mean the tab-like options in the results: All, Support Forums, etc. Selecting a different tab invokes a new, more targeted search query.

In your case “All” would be difficult to pull off, but the default could just be “Blog” results. Clicking a tab like “Support Forums” or “Online Help” invokes a new search with the same terms utilizing the appropriate search query. This mainly entails modifying the search results template to create appropriate search query links using the passed search terms. This will be much easier than creating a special search widget.
