Ok, so I created a category, called Thermal Systems (slug thermal-systems). I decided to change the structure and names of my categories, so deleted this category.

Later on I decided to create this category again. The slug for the same category name (Thermal Systems) is now something other than thermal-systems. I can not change it. I assume it is because it still exists somewhere in the wp dbase, even though it was deleted.

Since I do not want to have an ugly/misspelled slug name (e.g. wp would accept thermal-systemss), I would like to fix this. I saw a similar posting in the forums which suggested to go into the wp dbase with phpmyadmin and delete this entry int he wpterms table. I did this, but not only did it not fix the issue, but it also made dissapear child categories that this category had (hopefully this did not mess things up in a big way, for now everything seems ok).

So, I still do not know how to clean up my slug so that it is what I want it to be. Can anyone help? Thanks!

  • Have you emptied your trash? Do you have a page (or image) with that same name?

Hi, WPyogi! thanks for your response.

I have seen references to “empty the trash” in the forums, but no actual explanation of how to do this…can you help?

I do not have a page/image/tag with that same name.

    Thanks!

I guess that’s only with pages/posts – in which case you’ll see a trash link at the top of the list of posts or pages – if you click on trash, then you get a list of the ones in the trash and there is an empty trash link at the bottom.

If that doesn’t apply, what shows up on your categories screen?

And do you have any caching plugin on your site? If so, try clearing it.

Correct, trash only seems to appear with pages/posts.

Don’t have a caching plugin on the site.

Other than categories, nothing else (trash/clearing wise) shows up on the categories pages.

    Thanks again!

You could try deactivating your plugins and switching to Twenty Fifteen theme just to see if that changes anything – standard troubleshooting.

Thanks again…you know for some reason, it seems fine now…weird (this was actually before doing the empty trash procedures (I noticed in another browser window), but after manually deleting the entry from wpterms)…not sure what happened but thanks for your help!

By the way, are you aware of any good/reliable tool/plugin to clean up dead/old stuff from the database?

    Thanks!
