• I just got things together, but I am not sure if I understand this business of “default” categories completely.
In my case, there is a default category called “all” which I dont want to display, so — if i do not put any posts in it, it will not display onthe categories menu, or would it? Is this the best way to do this? Also, all of my categories which are present are not child nodes of that (hidden) default category either. Did I understand this part right?
(incidentally, what is the advantage/purpose of having a “default” category anyways?)

  • There’s two reasons for default category:
    1) When blogging by mail – if the mail doesn’t include a category designation, it uses the default one.
    2) When posting through the web interface, the default is “preselected” reducing one less thing to set.
As for not showing if there are no posts. That depends, there’s a setting on the link_categories function that allows you to show empty categories.
If a parent category has no posts in it, but child categories, WP in it’s dfault state will NOT show those child categories. Unless the showempty flag has been set.
