It took me some time to really get through the options this amazing plug-in offers. Yet I struggle a bit with the following situation:
I allow people to sign up for free on user level 0. All other levels are premium users. Level 0 shall only see basics.
My blog shall be visible from Level 1 upwards. I want to hide the “Blog” menu entry from the menu for users on Level 0.
The menu entry points to the “blog” category and lists all my blog entries.
I set up s2Members to hide all content of the “blog” category (including the sub-categories) for users in Level 0. I activate the “alternative view protection” to also protect “Nav menus”.
My expectation is that the menu item won’t show at all. But it does. Interestingly enough: If I click the menu item it will not open the content but re-direct to my page saying that the content is not available for free subscribers.
    Do I miss something???

  • No, you haven’t missed anything. You just need to install another plugin to do this job.

I recommend Nav Menu Roles, which recognizes all custom roles and will allow you to do exactly what you want.

Well, the s2members people said somewhere that it is supposed to work that way. Another plugin will require me to set the menu privacy in a second place. But I think s2members MUST be able to cover menus as well.
What does the “alternative view protection” do???

Alternative view protection stops anyone who is not logged in but who has the direct URL to a protected post, page or file from being able to type it into a browser and see it. (It provides other protections too.) You’d be surprised how many other membership plugins don’t provide this important function.

The Nav Menu Roles plugin won’t require you to create another menu. It adds a setting to each item on your current menu, so that you can decide when each will show. Try it and you’ll see.

I installed Nav Menu Roles and it looks okay for me. Unfortunately it doesn’t inherit settings down from a top menu item to sub-items.
Well, I’d say: The question is not really solved, but I am satisfied ??
