category post counts wrong

I’ve noticed whatever category I have set as the default posting category the post counts are incorrect. When I add a new page they go up by one for that category when I think they should just count posts.

This causes a problem when I use the blog in blog plug-in as shown here.

I get the extra text on the page “URLmatch”

If I change the default post category and then create a page (not a post) the post count for that category goes up by one.

How can I correct the number of posts in a category?
