category pages not working in underscores theme

i’m using the latest underscores theme and the category links aren’t working. when i click on the category link beneath a post i get an empty page. i’ve used underscores in the past without encountering this problem.
anyone know how i can fix this?
i’ve noticed when i switch themes, the category pages work.
where in underscores should i look to fix this?
