Category Page showing 404

Since the last update my protected categories are showing a 404 instead of a restricted message.
I have read the post “Ultimate Member 2.2.0. 404 page for restricted posts instead redirect or message”
In the category settings the
“Restrict access to this term and its posts?” is checked and the
“Would you like to display 404 error on the term’s archive page and terms’ posts single pages when users haven’t access?” is unchecked (have tried both checked and unchecked).
Either way the category page shows a 404 for logged out users and not the access restricted message. This is the same on 2 restricted post categories
