    Hi there,

On one of the sites I’m helping out on, they have a category navigation at the top of each page which used to work until either the site had WP update or plugin updates the other week.

Anyway, I’m pretty certain this is something simple I just don’t know where to look to fix it.

The links in the navigation at the top should look like this/direct in this manner – e.g.:
    https://www.website.com/category/disability

    However, they’re just pointing to:
    https://www.website.com/disability

So we’re getting a 404 error because the category bit is missing from the link URL.

Any help will be gratefully received! Thank you in advance ??

  • Howdy,
Can you list what plugins are Active?
There are plugins that will “help” to remove the “/category/” part, but they can goof things up.

Also, what are your settings under:
    Settings > Permalinks

    Hi Paul!

    Thank you so much for replying! Here’s some further info that might help;
I worked out that If I add links manually to the menu (menus> under appearance) using the “custom links” box the links work fine, it’s just using the “categories” box to add links where the links don’t work.

As for plugins, we have (not mentioning anything completely unrelated to the problem):
    CMS Tree Page View
    HTML Javascript Adder
    Redirection
    SEO Friendly Images
    SEO Slugs
    Use Google Libraries
    Visibility
    W3 Total Cache
    WordPress SEO

And for Permalinks, it’s set to “Post Name” – I did some reading that said set it to “Default” but that didn’t seem to work. The 404 we’re getting is quite odd, as it’s not a browser 404 but a wordpress one within the actual site, if you get me? The 404 is displayed where the post should show – when I changed the Permalinks setting (can’t remember which choice) it at one point started showing proper browser 404 errors (white page with black text).

Anyway, to temporarily fix the problem I have manually added all the links to the menus page via the “custom links” box, and they work fine, but it would be good to know why links made using the “categories” box don’t add the word “category” like it’s supposed to.

Worst comes to worst, we’ll just stop using the “categories” box for making new links on our menu and just do it through custom links.

Thank you again for your help!
    Kitty ??

    Howdy Kitty,

Please try this in your PermaLinks:
    /%category%/%postname%/

In totally unrelated and unsolicited news: One of our kitties is missing today! I’m running all over trying to find him. ?? Send me some good kitty vibes, please.

Let me know if this solution does not work out.
    Take care,
    Paul

    Hi there Paul,

Thank you so much – that worked a treat! All is functioning well, thank you ??

I am so sorry to hear about your lost kitty – early last year one of my three cats decided to go off wandering, he was gone for almost a week and I was a wreck! I was so very worried about him, I could barely sleep, so I do understand how you’re feeling ??

It was actually the cat in my avatar – Steve. He’s not too bright but he’s my special little guy, I love him, dearly, as I do the others also.

I actually wrote a blog with advice on finding a lost cat if you’d like to have a read? It’s Manchester, UK-centric I’m afraid, but there might just be a little bit of info that will help bring puss home.

Thank you again for your help, and I truly hope your kitty comes home soon.
    Kitty ??

    Glad it worked, Kitty.
And thanks for the encouraging words on my kitty. I’m hoping the birds have him freaked and he’ll try to come home this evening.

    Have a good day,
    Paul
