Category Grid page (Categories themselves, NOT posts)

I can find plenty of info on making pages with posts from a given category. (In fact this is about 99% of what I find doing searches.)

What I want INSTEAD is a page that has every category on it, displayed in a grid function. In fact, not just the category name, but the description below, and the category image (already have plug-in for image), plus a link to the most recent post in that category.

Any hints/tips/suggestions?

I’d rather not re-invent the wheel if there is a solution or partial solution already out there.

I did find this article (https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/display-wordpress-categories-in-a-fancy-grid-style-gallery/) that mentions a plug-in that is kinda close, but the plug-in is no longer available.

PS: Did contact the author of my theme and there is no built in support for something like this.
