category altering featured image

Built WP Portfolio theme and was able to uncheck categories- no category designation. That activated a slider window of main post in featured image window.
Now Portfolio will not allow me to uncheck category in new post and the featured window now goes to title on white background when hovering over featured image.
I want all my featured image windows to show main body of post on hover. If I uncheck category and update it just ignores the update.
