• I can’t seem to create categories. I’ve tried from both while posting a post and the category settings: they look fin for a moment but then they dissapear & my posts all go into uncategorized.

This may be a related issue: i wanted to rename “uncategorized” to “general” but though i foudn the place where teh setting is supposed t obe in Settings>Writing, there’s no dropdown there or editable field or anything, just the text Default Post Category/ Default Link Category
    nothing to click on.

Also i was wondering, i’ve enabled pretty links so the posts go itno /category/postname
but what would happen when i post something and then change it to a different category, does that link change or stay the old one? links to the old post via the old one would dissapear or would they stay? … of course all this assuming i find a way to fix the “uncategorized” issue

Thank you for your help. This is my first attempt at installing my own wordpress on my own server. It was scary to face but i’m really happy i did.. the possibilities are mindblowing!

“The category you are trying to create already exists.”

The categories field is empty but i can’t create it either. Maybe something with permissions?

if all of this is happening in admin and you have not modified the database your database may be corrupted. do you have db backups prior to where the problem started showing up ? if so, start over and keep a change log in case the problem crops up again.

uncategorized is a default category and i don’t think you can change anything in the admin area, that would be done in the database. it is the very first category and has an ID of “1” in several places in the database.

if you are going into the database messing with the categories this post may shed some light.
