I have a virtual courses website and I’ve noticed multiple people want to pay with COD rather than a online payment method. The biggest issue with online courses or virtual products is that people want instant access. No one wants to pay cash at their doorstep for a virtual product and get access to it hours or days later. I’ve thought of a process that could make this work, however I am unsure and needed some guidance. So below ill explain the steps of how I think it can work.

    1) User purchases the course on my website using COD as payment method.
    2) Website sends out a PDF via email to our Logistics Partner. The PDF would contain a unique code.
    3) The logistics company delivers a print of the PDF to the customer and in return gets paid in cash.
    4) The customer goes to our website enters the code and the woocommerce order status is changed from Pending to Complete and the customer gets instant access to the course.

Now the main issue im facing is the unique code im unsure of how i can generate this for each COD order. Secondly my LMS is linked with Woocommerce already so when the order status is marked as complete the customer automatically gets access to the course. But in this system i was thinking of using something like AutomatorWP or Uncanny Automator so that when the code is authenticated it triggers the automation and marks the woocommerce order as complete.

This is what I had in mind if anyone knows a better way pls let me know or if anyone can help make this plan a reality that would be great as well

  • Hi @stakehol!

I hear you but while reading your workflow, something isn’t very clear yet.

When a customer selects the COD payment method, WooCommerce automatically applies the order status to Pending or On-hold, instead of Completed, until payment is made upon delivery of the order by you or your shipping method.

You, as the store owner, need to confirm payment was collected before marking orders Complete in WooCommerce.

When you, manually, update the order status from pending / on-hold to complete, it sends an email to the user with the details of the virtual product.

Are your orders with the COD payment method being set to completed automatically?

I hope to hear from you soon!

At the moment we don’t have COD enabled on our website. But if you do enable it by default the order will be put on hold until i manually mark it as complete after receiving a confirmation from my logistics partner that they have received the cash.

    Hey @stakehol

To implement the steps and have more control at what point your orders should be marked as complete. I would suggest the WooCommerce Order Status Control extension. Check to see if it is something you can consider and create a presales ticket with us if you have any questions about it.

    Hope this helps!

While I couldn’t find a solution that addresses your request completely, the Partial COD For WooCommerce comes close.

It allows customers to use coupon codes to redeem their COD payments, which can be set flexibly.

Please know that there is a 30-day money-back guarantee if you are unhappy with the products or service. More on that here: https://woocommerce.com/refund-policy/

Also, you can use the services of the third-party plugins you mentioned above to achieve your stated requirements. However, as this forum is dedicated to the core features of WooCommerce, we cannot give advice on third-party plugins.

If you are interested in further customizations, please consider working with Woo-vetted experts here as well: https://woocommerce.com/customizations/

    Hope this helps!
