• How does the wordpress back end decide whether or not to us a new paragraph <p> at the end of a line, or line break <br />?

    It seems to me that I always hit carriage return, and mostly get the new para that I’m looking for, but sometimes have to go back into the html editor to change my line breaks to new paras.

  • Are you using the wysiwyg animal or the normal editor?

    wysiwg, i think. straight from the dashboard.

    In that one:
    Enter = paragraph
    Shift+Enter = br

    (Everything is “straight” from the dashboard – wysiwyg is also known as the RTE=rich text editor; tinymce…)

    I’ve found that sometimes WP will convert </p><p> to <br /> when editing existing copy in the Write Post area. It looks like a regular paragraph break until you Save and Continue Editing (or Publish) and then you see it’s just a break, even though you never entered a Shift + Enter.

    The surest way to fix it is to click the HTML button and fix it by hand in the pop-up window.

    I’ve come to accept it as an irritating bug. We’re on 2.02 at the moment, perhaps upgrading to 2.04 will fix it? Dunno.

    Nope. The surest way is to avoid the wysiwyg editor ??
