carousel element background image problem

when adding a background image to a carousel slide, it only appears on the left side of the slide resized to fit by about 20% of the slide. (no matter the size of the uploaded image) and the rest of the background is still white space.
how can i add a background image for the carousel slide that spans the entire slide?
