card_error_authentication_required

Hi @contremaitre,

It is normal to see “authentication_required” on both failed and successful transactions, as the message means that the 3DS check was triggered by the customer’s card. It is possible that the “failed payment” is only visible in “events and logs” and only indicates that the authentication was required.

For this, turn on logging under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe and try to see if you can reproduce the error. If you can, check the logs under WooCommerce > Status > Logs (the Stripe log will be in a dropdown on the right side) and see if there is a specific error like card declined, or such.

– I don’t have a “authentication_required” message, but a “card_error_authentication_required” error message on user front end. It’s in red at the top of the form where the user is trying to pay. Here is a screenshot :

If possible you can ask the customer to try to pay again using a different browser or device and make sure they are not using ad blocks or a firewall.

The user tried on a different device/browser with the same issue. But he also tried a regular order (not subscription) and it worked. Only the subscription fails every time.

However, I’m not seeing any subscription plugins installed or active on your site. Can you clarify what kind of products these are, since you say payment with Stripe works with all others?

Thanks for the clarification.

Upon checking the system status report, the site is not using the latest versions of WooCommerce and PHP.

You can configure a staging site to perform these updates (And to do not affect the production site), you can request staging facilities to your host, or you can consider using this plugin WP Staging for quickly spinning up a new test site.

To update WooCommerce and PHP on the staging site please check:

Once configured you can create a subscription test order.

If that does not work, you can switch your theme to Storefront temporarily disable all plugins except for WooCommerce, Stripe Payment Gateway, and WooCommerce subscriptions (i.e. Abonnements WooCommerce), then place a test subscription order again.

See if the issue is still present, if not, it means there was a conflict and you can reactivate the theme and plugins one by one and check again after each reactivation until you find the culprit.

I tried to order a subscription with stripe tests cards (the one which require 3D secure authentication) and it works. So, updating won’t change anything, my testing will also work.
It only happens with a few customer and I cannot make them purchase on a staging site.

I’m seeing the same thing. Recently, we’ve had lots of failed initial payments on subscriptions. Especially with cards issued in the EU (but maybe this is a coincidence).

We’re losing customers and I can’t figure out why. This is almost always down to the same authentication problem you described.

Any news on this? Was a solution found?
