• Hi all, I have searched for an answer and found many with the same question but not an answer that has fixed my issue.

My blog is a couple of months old, I have never had problems uploading images in the past. Today I am getting this error:

Unable to create directory /wp-content/uploads/2009/01. Is its parent directory

I am on a Mac, WP 2.7 (problem started this morning with WP 2.6 so I upgraded thinking it would solve the problem but it didn’t), FireFox and/or Safari.

    My code knowledge is limited.

    Please help!

    Thanks in advance.

You probably have the wrong permissions set on the uploads directory, so that it was unable to create the 2009 folder in your uploads.

Use FTP and check the permissions of your uploads folder in your account.

But I’ve been uploading images in 2009 so far. I will attempt to use the FTP to check permissions. My host is BlueHost. Should the permissions be 777?

I’d say 666 permissions, actually. But yes, basically that’s it.

Maybe there’s another reason. Did you hit your storage space quota, perhaps? Something else wrong on the server? All that error message is telling you is that it can’t create the folder it’s trying to create. It does not say why, because it has no idea why. Nothing WordPress does can change the permissions or ability for it to create files, WP is higher level than that.

Now I just crashed my blog.
I can’t get the permission set back to where they were – the site is gone!
    Do I call bluehost?

BlueHost was able to fix my site ??

Anybody else having trouble uploading images? Bluehost says my folder is writable and there are images in it, but I can’t upload. There is plenty of storage space remaining.

Hello Otto, or someone. I use IE and Firefox. My server is HostGator. I recently uploaded a WP 2.7 into a new blog. Managed to navigate thru a post and then, when I wanted to insert a photo/image, I place my curser where I wanted the image to go ..went to the Upload Image Icon, up came a choice of flash player or browser, I choose Browser, ( tho’ in efforts to fix, have tried both ) then, selected my image from my HD, choose upload image and up comes a window with my image, placement choice buttons, and size buttons. Then, I select upload image to post … and the white working box screen freezes on my computer. In order to get the square white box off my screen, I have to hit refresh. No photo shows in my post. I got HostGator on the phone, and their tech was able to post an image just fine. I’ve tried on three different computers, two seperate browsers. I use AVG on two, and Computer Associates on my main.

Any suggestions at all here for me? Many, many thanks!!!

I am using WP 2.5 because a plug-in I use doesn’t work with 2.7. I am having the same problem as lbuilta59 — unable to uploading images. Here’s my scenario:
Windows XP, Firefox 2.0.0.20, Bluehost, WP 2.5. I was able to upload images to my blog just fine on 1/9/09 and nothing on my computer has changed. The problem is not Bluehost but I think it’s Firefox because when I tried to upload images using IE, it worked! So now I have to use IE to upload images. Can’t imagine what’s going on here!

Addendum: Apparently I recently received an automatic update for Adobe Flash from v.9 to v.10. This seems to be what’s causing the problem in Firefox. When I delete Adobe Flash v. 10, the media upload in WordPress works fine. I need to get back to v.9 ASAP or permanently switch to IE for my uploads. ??

WordPress 2.7 has the fix for the Flash 10 problem in it.

lbuilta59, try going to your Settings then Miscellaneous and change the uploads folder to a different folder like, wp-content/uploads or something and see if that works. Also try using the Flash and Browser uploaders and see if either of those work. As to permissions, it should work fine with 755 on folders and 644 on files.

    hi Guys
I am having the same problem. I was able to upload images in jan/01 folder and all of a sudden i have this red warning …Unable to create directory /wp-content/uploads/2009/01. Is its parent directory.
I tried changing permissions to 755 and still it doesn’t work. I use Internet explorer.
Also, I would like to upload a gallery. I have uploaded it to my ftp site. how do I bring it to my wordpress.
    regards and thanks in anticipation.

Files under 500 px wide should have no problem.

    Hi,
I found the solution to this problem after very long (very very) time.
It’s so simple, I’m shame to explain:
You have to check if the URL for the installation do not have any
    CAPITAL letters.
    * You can change this URL at the settings panel

I had! When i change it to be without any CAPITALS it works

    Whoopee
Hope this is also your bug
