Can’t upload .docx files (sorry, you’re not allowed to upload this file type)

  • When attempting to upload a .docx file to a page, I get the error “Sorry, you’re not allowed to upload this file type.” I have tried dragging and dropping, uploading through the File block, and uploading the file to Media. All three of those attempts resulted in the same error message about the file type.

    But, as far as I understand, WordPress does generally allow the uploading of .docx files. For what I’m working on, I’ll need for myself and specific site users I approve to be able to upload various file types, including .fdx, .docx, .pdf, .indd, .ai, .psd, and .epub. Is there a simple way / plugin that would allow all of these file types to be allowed or to remove this restriction completely (allowing the upload of any kind of file)? I’ve tried one plugin (File Upload Types from WPForms) that didn’t work for anything but .epub and .psd, for some reason.

    I found some relatively straightforward instructions on Google, but when I get to the media settings part of my dashboard, I don’t see the option to choose which file types to accept, only how to organize the files.

    My current theme is Dark Minimalist Blogger (Superbthemescom), if that helps.

    I have the most rudimentary of coding skills, so please be sensitive to that when responding. Most of the answers I find on forums like this look like the title sequence of The Matrix got run through a wood chipper. I am the poster child for “explain it to me like I’m five.” ^_^

  • Have you tried to add this lines in wp-config.php define(‘ALLOW_UNFILTERED_UPLOADS’, true);

    <section class=”pusher” id=”main-content” role=”main”><section class=”background-wrap”>
    <code class="default">define('ALLOW_UNFILTERED_UPLOADS', true);
    </section></section>

    This might not best practice, but you can disable upload filters by adding this code into your wp-config.php

    define(‘ALLOW_UNFILTERED_UPLOADS’, true);
