cant upgrade automatically – help

I’d like to upgrade my WordPress version, i’m on 2.8.4. When i try to automatically upgrade i’m presented with a screen and an error message saying that “There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct.”

Please help not sure what settings i’m suppose to answer and i’m falling behind in software currency here!!!!
