• On my dashboard, I have the opportunity to update to WordPress 5.2. When I click it I get an error of You cannot update because WordPress 5.2 requires PHP version 5.6.20 or higher. You are running version 5.5.37.

While your site is being updated, it will be in maintenance mode. As soon as your updates are complete, your site will return to normal.

I updated my PHP to 5.6 through Host Gators CPanel under PHP Selection.

How come it’s not reflecting on my site, and how come I still can’t update my WordPress to the newest version?

The version of PHP 5.6 they offer may not be 5.6.20.

Are you able to upgrade any higher? We recommend PHP 7.3.

If you install the Health Check plugin, it will tell you all the details of your installation.
If it says that you still have PHP 5.5.37, you will need to ask your host why the PHP you choose does not show on your site.

And just a heads up: the plan is to require PHP 7.0 in Decenber.

    Hi James & Joy!

I first updated it to the 7.2 PHP but it wasn’t reflecting on my wordpress at all and still wasn’t able to update. Is there a waiting period of some sort for PHP 7.2 to reflect on my WordPress itself?

Then I switched back down to 5.6 because one of the plugins I use doesn’t work with a PHP higher than 5.6.

The PHP version is controlled by your hosting provider, so if the change is not being reflected, you’ll need to contact their support.

As for that one plugin which can’t support above PHP 5.6, please keep in mind what Joy mentioned, that WordPress is planned to require PHP 7 by December.

I have had problems in the past when updating PHP versions and things still don’t work.

It turned out there was a file in my directory telling the server to use a specific version of PHP which overrides any other configuration I made.

It may have been in .htaccess or some other file. I’m someone can jump in here with specifics.

This may be a bit late, but the specific file driving this is the .htaccess file in the wp-admin folder.
