I’m not sure if the 5.8 upgrade broke things, but I’m having issues since that upgrade. When I log in to the admin console I briefly see an indicator that I have plugins to update, and then it goes away. On the Updates page, it says all of my plugins are up to date. They were almost all set to auto-update, but now they all have auto-update disabled. Any attempts to enable auto-update don’t change things.

I have Sucuri and it sends emails when plugins are out of date, that’s how I knew. I can go to the Plugins page and see they are all out of date. There is no option to update them from that page.

First, should I panic? I could update them all manually but that’s not sustainable. I’ve added filters to my functions.php file to auto-update plugins but it isn’t doing it, and my config file does not have any lines in it about updates. Second, what should I check next?

    Thanks!

No, don’t panic. First of all before the upgrade did you perform a full backup?

Now, before changing anything I strongly suggest to make a full backup (files and database).

I also suggest to create a local version of your site, and test any possible solution there before applying any change to your live site.

I have nightly backups via VaultPress that should be complete enough. I’m having Sucuri take a look in case it is security related. When they’re done I’ll do some manual updates.

Could a plugin do this kind of thing to core WP functionality? I haven’t changed the site in years other than updates.

Same here, first i thought it was an elementor plugin fault′s but wasn′t. It Seems to be an error with Blocks from guttemberg so i replace all my site with files from version 5.7 and deactivate updates.

Wow, so you rolled back to 5.7, basically? And that worked? I’d rather do manual updates until 5.9 fixes it (I assume). Does anyone know anything about the next minor version?

    Is this a reported error?

Thanks for the info! A malware scan and work done by Sucuri didn’t find anything, so I think there is a conflict preventing updates for me. I’ll keep manually updating (renaming the files folder and then reinstalling) and hopefully the next release fixes it.

I have the same issue with my site, I briefly see the number of updates available against the plugins and updates menus but when opening the update page it shows all plugins, themes and translations are up to date – even though they clearly aren’t.

I have reported it as a bug (#53850).

Thanks for reporting it, Ian. It’s always so reassuring to know that others are seeing the same thing. Let us know if you figure it out, and I’ll do the same.

I reported it as a bug and this was picked quickly up by “audrasjb” who could not reproduce it on a clean install and asked for screen shots – which I added. However, although the bug has now the status of “assigned”, there has been no further correspondance. Lets hope it is being worked on as it is becoming frustrating.

For info, I use a couple of plugins developed by 10web. The pro versions come with a plugin (10web manager) that links to an external dashboard. This allows me to see which of my plugins need updating and, fortunately, I’ve been able to update them remotely via that dashboard. (I don’t have this plugin installed on my test site so I can rule this out as being the cause of the problem).

Thanks for the update, Ian. You’re right, doing these manual updates is getting old.

Suddenly the problem has gone away for my two sites. I can only guess it was plugin/theme related and a recent update has fixed it.

The change in behaviour was noted after a number of plugin updates were applied via a third-party dashboard (the only way I could do updates) – plus the first theme update since the problem started (I use Poseidon).

Other than that, I cannot point to any other solution. Hope it is solved for you guys as well!

@ian-helliwell I noticed the same thing just now and came to this post. I’m able to update again. Are you using Async JavaScript? I’m suspecting it might have been that one, but I’m not sure. Either way, my issue is gone.

Having issues with the 5.8 update as well. I’ve completely lost the left hand dashboard panel- there’s NOTHING there but profile, dashboard (that takes me nowhere), a jetpack page and a notification that I need to update to 5.8. I can’t access anything that’s normally on the left panel menu. What am I missing? How did this happen?

WAIT. This was an easy fix: I was logged in under incorrect admin name. ugh
