Can't Update Pages/Posts: Screen Goes White

  • I have no trouble accessing admin. My site is up and running. HOWEVER, when I tried to add media to a post–nothing is there. It’s as if all JPGS are gone. When I tried to preview a post–white screen. When I tried to deactivate all plugins (I was going to reactivate one by one to find the culprit) and hit “apply,” the screen went white. (Although I can get back to admin without incident.)

    (I’m using a child theme of Twenty Twelve. All plugin and themes are up to date.)

    Any ideas? (Please be gentle with directions–not well versed in coding.)

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default Twenty Twelve theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Turns out it is my child theme. But now how do I figure out what went wrong?

    It was working very well for awhile but I did add code to eliminate drop down menu (another forum member was kind enough to offer the code) and the problem started shortly after that. But even when I took the code out of the php file and uploaded the file again to my child theme, it still didn’t fix the problem.

    So not sure where I go from here. I like my child theme and would like it to work.

    What file did you change? You should be able to access the child theme files via FTP and/or deactivate that theme by changing the name on the child theme folder.

    OK. Fixed it. I had my original child theme folder saved on my desktop. I uploaded to my site via FTP, and the problem is solved.

    I believe the code that I used (see post above) to eliminate the drop down menu might have had something to do with it. (I used that code in my functions.php file.)

    Yes, changes to functions.php can definitely cause a site to crash if there are any code errors or any problems – although in this case, the recommendation came from a very knowledgeable person.

    I’m sure it was me! As a newbie, I might have added it in the wrong spot? I plan to try again since I know now how to get out of the jam if I cause one again.
