• I hadn’t added a blog post in quite a while, so when I did that this morning I was presented with screens I wasn’t used to, and couldn’t find a way to simply paste text (including code) into it. That’s what I’ve always done – develop the post in Macromedia, then copy the text and past it into my new post. But I couldn’t find a way to do that. I resorted to allowing the “new post” procedure to do whatever it did (not what I wanted), then went back and edited it with the classic editor which allowed me to simply paste in that text including code. Is there any way to do that during the “add new post” process?

  • Is your “quite a while” almost 2 years? The new editor came out in WP 5.0 in December 2018.
I don’t use the new editor, but you can go into HTML mode and paste. It will try to convert to blocks when you do anything else.
You can use the Classic editor plugin to continue the old way, but more and more of WP is being switched to using blocks (widget screen, menu screen, full site editing).
You could also easily migrate to ClassicPress (forked from WP 4.9) or use Ghost.

If you type “/H”, you can grab and HTML block and paste into that.

I couldn’t find a way to do that during the “new post” process, only after I had created it (not the way I wanted) and then went back and edited it with the classic editor. Can you tell me how to access the classic editor during the initial “new post” creation?

Here’s how to invoke a “classic” block in the block editor.

No matter what I enter (/H or /cla as in the video), I don’t see “Classic” in the vertical list. If I scroll through the entire vertical list, I don’t see “Classic”.

Here is how to do it without the search or / thingy. Use the 3 dot menu.

Not sure what specific issues you’re having, but you can just paste in your code and it will automatically format it for you, for the most part. Click where it says “Start writing” and then paste in your text. The block editor is smart, it’ll figure most of it out.

If you prefer to have everything in one block and not use the blocks part of the block editor, then type /cl and pick Classic from the popup menu to insert a classic block. You’ll get this:

That is a classic block. It’s basically the old editor in a single block.

Thanks! What works best for me is after “add new”, click the vertical three dots, then select “Switch to classic editor”.
