Since I updated to WordPress 5.9.1, I haven’t had the option to choose a featured image in my post editor settings. I’ve done some troubleshooting and the problem seems to be that Yoast is conflicting with something. When I deactivate Yoast, the option to set a featured image is there. Any ideas how to fix this? It’s annoying to activate and deactivate to write a post.

  • Hey @captaincurls,

    Thank you for reaching out.

We understand you are no longer seeing the featured image option when Yoast SEO is enabled. Let’s dive in.

I tried to replicate this, but on a test environment with WordPress 5.9.1, Twenty Twenty Two theme, and latest Yoast SEO 18.2 enabled, I can just see and set featured images on posts.

Can you check in the block editor preferences under Panels – Document Settings if Featured image is toggled on?

I have had the same issue since 5.9.0 was released and had hoped for a resolution with this week’s release. On SOME of my old posts, I can still see/edit featured images but none of my new posts show the option to select an image. Further, when going into the block editor preferences, Featured Image isn’t even an option to toggle. I am not using Yoast and have been unable to find where the conflict is coming from.

Same issue here. I thought I was the only one. Featured image is not in the Document settings.

I still haven’t figured out the issue, sometimes it works but I’m unable to replicate the solution, but for some reason, when I change a setting or just refresh the page, the featured image reappears. But this is not always, only sometimes. ??

This is the worst bug to track down. It’s inconsistent. But when I started this thread, I consistently had a featured image option when Yoast was deactivated and I did not have a featured image panel when it was activated. I thought I had finally tracked it down.

Today, I can set a featured image no matter what I do with Yoast on a straightforward post. But Yoast still seems to be interfering with a custom post type I created using Pods. I’ve successfully used this custom post type and set featured images for about a year and a half. When it’s not working (when Yoast is activated), Featured Image isn’t even an option in Panels.

Where you able to find a fix for this, Even I am facing this option and not able to figure out what I should do in order to fix this. As a matter of fact I am not using Yoast At all!

    Hi,

Often, we see problems occur in combination with another plugin or theme. The fastest way to rule out any conflict, is to deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme like Twenty Twenty.

Please test this on your development or staging site, if you have one. If not, we recommend using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. This plugin has a troubleshooting mode, which does not affect normal visitors to your site.

If you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process: How to check for plugin conflicts

We recommend you perform a conflict check starting with a default WP theme such as TwentyTwenty and only the Yoast SEO plugin. If you are able to add a featured image to a post as expected, you can then start by enabling your preferred theme and then your plugins, one by one, until you are able to reproduce the issue and identify the source of the conflict.

I tried this before I posted. The Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin doesn’t work well any longer. There are multiple reports on their support page, no response to them, and no update in the past 8 months. It essentially freezes up on me. I have used it in the past so I’m familiar with how it works.

I used Plugin Detective instead and it pointed to Yoast as the problem.

    Hi,

We were able to use the Health Check plugin to enable troubleshooting mode in order to test it starting from a default WP theme (e.g. TwentyTwenty) and only the Yoast SEO plugin, but we understand if you aren’t comfortable using this plugin.

You can also set up a separate staging environment to see if you are able to reproduce the issue.

You’ve mentioned you’ve used ‘Plugin Detective’ and it pointed to Yoast SEO as the cause. Could you provide us with some more details and screenshots so we can try and understand how this is related to the issue with the featured image not appearing? You can use snipboard.io or imgur.com to upload a screenshot and share some the links here.

This thread has been marked as resolved due to a lack of activity.

You’re always welcome to re-open this topic. Please read this post before opening a new request.

    Thanks for understanding!

I had the same issue here: https://agenciakitdigital.es/ because of Yoast duplicate post plugin, after disabling the option to set featured post re-appeared.
