Can’t set a single line of text’s color

Upgraded to WordPress version 5.0. VERY sorry I did. I hte the new editor. It took the simplicity of editing away. Despite what the WordPress boilerplate says, ” WordPress is here to simplify the process, not the outcome.” it has not simplified the process.
Why can I no longer simply highlite a line of text and select a color for it? Now when I select a color it turns the entire block into that color. Not just the line I have highlitesd.
Please help! This new editor has brought my blog which is viewed by thousands almost to a halt.
