Can't seem to update WP core. Update Now leads to empty page

  • Hi all – I’m longtime basic level wordpress user and new to this forum. I have searched for this as best i can so sorry if this question is a basic one.

    I have a message on my dashboard saying “WordPress 3.5.1 is available! Please update now.” I backed up everything and clicked “Update now” for an automatic update and it simply takes me to a bank dashboard page (not a white screen – the page is the admin dashboard and is functional – it says “Update WordPress” at the top and that is all.

    I deactivated and reactivated to plugins to no avail.

    I am running a theme called Shepard, but am not sure if i switch it off what will happen to my site (as in I am not sure if deactivating and then reactivating theme results in things being reset).

  • You could do a manual update – see:

    Changing themes should not reset anything as theme settings and options are saved in the database for that theme. Still, you should check to make sure that your theme is compatible with 3.5.1+

    No matter what, it’s always advisable to make sure you do a complete backup before doing any updating.
