can't seem to switch the main navigation

I am trying to write an if/else statement for the primary navigation bar. When you login, I need it to show a separate nav (but in the same spot). I’ve created the new menu in wordpress, but no matter what I do, I can’t get anything except the primary nav to show up. Even if I ditch the if/else statement, and just try and change the primary nav to the new one I created, it doesn’t work.

does bootstrap use some weird way to include menus? Like i’m not sure what this is doing:
