• I may be being incredibly stupid but I can’t make either pointing my DNS A records to the host IP address OR pointing a CNAME record to my hosting domain work to map my sites in Multisite to separate (external) domain names I own.

Is there some piece I am missing?

I’m setting the DNS records to point an A record to the IP for my main hosting domain(or I have tried linking CNAME records to the domain name), then setting the domain I want mapped as the ‘primary domain’ for my wordpress multisite site (site ID all filled it)… And shouldn’t that just work?

    What link am I missing?
    Help!!

Suppose your main site is MAIN.COM & the site that you want to map the domain to is SUB.MAIN.COM then the CNAME you would use in MAPPED.COM DNS is SUB.MAIN.COM.

If you have a folder install then you would have to use MAIN.COM as the CNAME instead of SUB…

    Thanks Ron,

So (forgive my stupidity) even though my site shows up as MAIN.COM/SUB (this obv doesn’t work as a CNAME) in my WordPress multisites, I should enter SUB.MAIN.COM as the CNAME in my MAPPED.com DNS?

My second paragraph is how to handle folder installs.

Oh I see, sorry, I didn’t realise that – I did already try it using MAIN.COM as the CNAME but it didn’t seem to work – I will try again.

So, this still isn’t working? What am I doing wrong?

Perhaps you could describe what is happening.

    I’m having the same problem..
I’m trying to map outfocus.in to thefeathers.in/outfocus but neither the DNS A record or the CNAME record (thefeathers.in) seem to work. Again I might be super stupid and doing a major mistake. Could you guide me through it?
