    Hello all,

I inherited maintenance on a WordPress website that uses “Really Simple SSL.” It works fine but the plugin recommends that I change from WordPress redirect to .htaccess redirect. It offers to do this for me. However when I try that it looks like I have success but the change doesn’t stick and the recommendation to change the redirect persists. Not a huge problem but its baffling to me. Ideas?

Is the htaccess rule added afterwards? You can find the .htaccess file in the root of your website, when you connect to your site with ftp.

There’s already an .htaccess file in the document root. It has entries from W3TotalCache and from WordPress itself. No new rules get added to it in the attempt to enable .htaccess redirection.

    Hi @flicker177,

Do you also happen to receive a notice on the right side of the Settings page, about the .htaccess file not being writable on your environment, prompting to add the lines manually instead?

It would appear like in the below screenshot:

I never saw a screen like that. For some reason, ReallySimpleSSL has now stopped complaining about it. Dunno why. The 301 redirect has a green check. The WordPress health screen still shows the .htaccess redirect not enabled. If I click on “Fix” it takes me to the ReallySimpleSSL screen that says everything’s fine!

The .htaccess file is writable – 644 permission.

Again, this is a relatively low traffic site and the https and www redirects seem to work fine. Its just a bit confusing.

    Hi @flicker177,

Going by your description, it could be that the redirect had in fact already been enabled; but that the notice about it was still ‘cached’ and therefore still appeared.

In any case: glad to hear that you’ve confirmed that the redirect itself works fine, and that the notice has also dismissed itself in the meantime.

    Kind regards, Jarno
