After a long hiatus without the need to create new blogs, the other day we fired one up and it refuses to show any posts or pages, even though they have been published. I created a second new blog afterwards just to see if maybe it was a fluke, but it has the same issue.

The blog is visible online and there is no problem logging in the admin area. We can write new posts and pages and “publish” them, but when you view the website nothing shows and we get a page not found message.

If you go into the admin area, it shows a count of the posts / pages on both the dashboard, as well as the post /page panels, but it won’t show the actual pages or posts.

On the homepage it shows the new pages in the navigation bar, but clicking on that gets you a page not found message.

All of our older blogs work just fine, we can post, edit, etc without any headaches.

The url for the test blog created is: tommy-test.thebiergarten.com. One of the older blogs that works ok is: yai-cooking.thebiergarten.com

Any ideas from the gurus on how to remedy this ? We started with WPMU 2.something back in Feb 2009 and have kept up it upgraded via the automatic upgrade function as new releases come out and yes, we use the update network function to bring all the old blogs up to date.

Oh yeah ?? .htaccess is insanely powerful and dangerous.

These articles have been a lifesaver for me: https://perishablepress.com/press/tag/htaccess/

    hi guys :

    i have wp + bp in a sub dir ( mydomain/1)

put the install there , then added bp to plugins , then changed as it asked for the permalinks from default another – say numeric for example , then as it told me to do , changed the htacess file – since that stage any page will not display.

I had no htacess file to start with , so i opened up text edit ( I on mac ) and copy pasted what it generated in my dashbord , nothign else , ftp’d that up and then messed round with the permission million of times till nwo when i totally mxed otu and cant work out why it will nto display anythign ?

trierd all the permissions , anysuggestion – i have read and read every forum and doc’s to try and not be totaly dumbass here – sorry !!!

ps _ this has maxed my brain out and i now want to die LOL

    any help would be awesome

Make sure the htaccess file has the dot at the front of the name and not the end, with no extra extension.

    hi andrea –
    i have …

    ” .htacess.rtf ”

if i take down the final exstension of rtf then it cerates internal server error on AL 100 % pages , whereas b4 it only created erro displaying pages i have created , things like home work .

i think might be an issue with the server allowing .htacesss – i running apache and need to sort out the overide setting i think as this is hgettign me nowhere fast !

    Two things.

    1) RTF is RICH text file. That could be screwing it up. Try making it in notepad, and make sure you’ve not got any funky characters.

    2) If even a blank .htaccess file causes problems, you need to call your host and ask if they allow mod_rewrite.

    i have …

    ” .htacess.rtf ”

Just login via ftp or cpanel and rename the file to “.htaccess” and no quotes.

    He did, and

if i take down the final exstension of rtf then it cerates internal server error on AL 100 % pages

Which makes me think the server doesn’t allow for mod_rewrite OR there’s some rich text in the file munging it up.

Doh, yeah if it was an RTF file it’d definitely have some crap in there.

    hey guys :

knwo what afetr saying that right , it sill apears that it is not rewritaable ..

just been on to server admin – they say they have it cool / server is by default allowed to have htaccess permission wise – so i did to need to worry there ,

Initaially the problem was that if i made a new page for example in the wp control panel then went and checked it out , it would not display , not i have buddypress installed with WP too right …

then for some reason it now works when i have changed the default permalink to something else – in this case i choose numeric right …

but i am now noticing that despite the new pages i create display this time , it does keep flashing up on screen that wp is telling me ( via the control panel ) that the it could have done this automatically if my .htaccess files were writeable !!!

so i make a change to permalink , say from numeric to data + time – then dsave changes – it say same –

back to process like b4 – except this time it display the pages

    is that an issue ?

also with BP I can not edit profile as page faisl to display but eveythign else seems cool

    u rock man ( wish i did lol )

    cheers man

they say they have it cool / server is by default allowed to have htaccess permission wise –

Right, but WP doesn’t have permission to write to it. ??

    spacekad

    (@spacekad)

ok , so how do i get wp to wrtie it

    thanx Andrea

    spacekad

    (@spacekad)

    guys :

does any know how to actualyl allwo WP to be able to write the htacess file then ?

    please advise
